AVIF vs JPG

AVIF images saved from websites often won’t open in older apps or upload forms. JPG works everywhere, but expect a bigger file, because AVIF is the more efficient format.

About the two formats

AVIF

AVIF uses compression from the AV1 video codec and usually makes the smallest image files of any common format. Browser support is broad, but desktop apps are still catching up.

JPG

JPG is the default format for photos. It throws away detail the eye barely notices to keep files small, and every device made in the last 30 years can open it.

How to convert AVIF to JPG

  1. 1Add your AVIF files.
  2. 2Adjust the quality if you like.
  3. 3Download the JPG files.

Questions

Do my files get uploaded?

No. AVIF to JPG runs entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device. Close the tab and they're gone.

Is it really free?

Yes. No account, no daily limits and no watermark on your files.

Why is the JPG larger than the AVIF?

AVIF stores the same picture in far fewer bytes. Lower the quality slider if you need a smaller JPG.
