GIF vs PNG

PNG keeps the GIF’s crisp edges and transparency, drops the 256-colour limit for future edits, and is often smaller for still images.

About the two formats

GIF

GIF is the old format behind animated memes. Each frame can only use 256 colours, so photos look grainy and files are large for what they show.

PNG

PNG stores every pixel exactly, with no quality loss, and supports transparent backgrounds. That makes it ideal for graphics and screenshots, but photos saved as PNG are very large.

How to convert GIF to PNG

  1. 1Add your GIF files.
  2. 2Adjust the quality if you like.
  3. 3Download the PNG files.

Questions

Do my files get uploaded?

No. GIF to PNG runs entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device. Close the tab and they're gone.

Is it really free?

Yes. No account, no daily limits and no watermark on your files.

What happens to an animated GIF?

The first frame becomes a still PNG with its transparency kept.
