JPG vs AVIF

AVIF is the most efficient common format for photos, so it’s the best choice when every kilobyte on a web page counts. Fewer apps can open AVIF than WebP, which is why many sites serve AVIF with a JPG fallback.

About the two formats

JPG

JPG is the default format for photos. It throws away detail the eye barely notices to keep files small, and every device made in the last 30 years can open it.

AVIF

AVIF uses compression from the AV1 video codec and usually makes the smallest image files of any common format. Browser support is broad, but desktop apps are still catching up.

How to convert JPG to AVIF

  1. 1Add your JPG files.
  2. 2Adjust the quality if you like.
  3. 3Download the AVIF files.

Questions

Do my files get uploaded?

No. JPG to AVIF runs entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device. Close the tab and they're gone.

Is it really free?

Yes. No account, no daily limits and no watermark on your files.

Should my website use AVIF or WebP?

AVIF makes smaller files at the same quality; WebP opens in more apps. Many sites serve AVIF first and fall back to WebP or JPG.
