PNG vs AVIF

AVIF keeps transparency too and usually makes the smallest file of all. Encoding is slower than other formats, so a large image can take a few seconds in your browser.

About the two formats

PNG

PNG stores every pixel exactly, with no quality loss, and supports transparent backgrounds. That makes it ideal for graphics and screenshots, but photos saved as PNG are very large.

AVIF

AVIF uses compression from the AV1 video codec and usually makes the smallest image files of any common format. Browser support is broad, but desktop apps are still catching up.

How to convert PNG to AVIF

  1. 1Add your PNG files.

Questions

Do my files get uploaded?

No. PNG to AVIF runs entirely in your browser, so your files never leave your device. Close the tab and they're gone.

Is it really free?

Yes. No account, no daily limits and no watermark on your files.

Why does AVIF take longer than other formats?

AVIF’s encoder searches harder for savings. That costs a few seconds of your computer’s time and pays off in a much smaller file.
